On coming across this lecture on Thomas Cole, given in October 2018, at the National Gallery, I thought as well as being both informative, interesting to watch also is very much a warning of things that may happen if we do not learn from the past.
The lecturer talks about Cole and his early life, fairly well to do family, who fall on hard times, [so rather a rag to riches story, more the reverse] Cole's family move from Bolton in 1818 after is father had become bankrupt a few years earlier. leading to the families move to Philadelphia and then to Ohio before eventually settling in New York.
Then the talk expands on Coles early life, is travels to Europe and its comparison to America, Europe a landscape no longer a wilderness, but with man’s footprint everywhere one travels, it large and crowded cities and the dirt and pollution from it industries. As I mentioned earlier, Europe in the 1850's in comparison with America in the 1850's wide open country with pristine forests, lakes and rivers. Now look around at America in the 1950's onwards [or for that matter the rest of the earth were man’s presence, and greed. as touched]
As well as the lecture at the National Gallery take a look at; American Scenery--Thomas Cole vs NASA. https://museumzero.blogspot.com/2018/12/american-scenery-thomas-cole-vs-nasa.html
Similar views, but presented in a different manner, but with the possibility of a similar outcome for the future.
